FIRE RATING

Fire rated downlights within residential or commercial installations help reduce the spread of fire through different zones of the property. Initially when a hole is cut through the ceiling space, this allows fire to track through ceilings and spread through the ceiling cavities.

For example; A multi-level living space may have 3 residents living above each other. If a fire starts in the bottom level it can quickly spread through ceiling spaces and move into the other spaces. The purpose of fire rated downlights is to reduce the risk of this happening.

The fire rated downlight effectively blocks the hole in the ceiling using an intumescent material that expands when exposed to heat resulting in the fire spread being significantly reduced.

HUGO Lighting has tested to BS 476-21 resulting in a 90 minute classification for our product. From June 2019, the standard was adopted in NZ as New Zealand Standards and British Standards 476.21 had no technical differences. Another fire rated test standard is AS 1530.4 which is an Australian Standard.
